Hotel Plaza Colon – Granada, Nicaragua

The location of Hotel Plaza Colon couldn’t be better, opposite the Central Park, making it a perfect option for a stay in Granada. The hotel began life as a refurbished house with only nine rooms. The rest of the hotel was built from scratch according to the same traditional style.

You access the rooms through large doors from the internal balcony that surrounds both of hotel courtyards. The rooms are comfortable with dark reproduction antique furniture reminiscent of a bygone era with nice comfortable modern trimmings necessary for a truly luxurious room. There are 27 rooms and six have balconies that overlook the Plaza Central and are more akin to suites than standard hotel rooms. Prices start at US$99 (+ 17% tax).

From the time of check-in the staff are incredibly helpful. All speak good English and are happy to answer any questions you might have about the hotel, Granada or any trips or activities in the surrounding area, making sure you feel truly welcome during your stay. Carlos the bellman has such enthusiasm about the hotel and Granada that you can’t help but be carried along.

The complimentary breakfast that is served by the pool every morning is great, the buffet breakfast is particularly delicious. The pool is just the right size for a quick dip to cool off after a hot trek around the historic city but you may have to share it with lots of excitable children who have the same idea as you. There is access to a parking lot 24hrs.

The hotel is the only boutique hotel in Granada owned solely by Nicaraguans. They are also working with Rainforest Alliance and implementing their sustainability criteria to gain a full certification. They focus on supporting the local community, promoting individual’s initiatives through human resources and where possible buying local produce, as well as implementing recycling and water and electricity conservation. They also support various community projects and sponsor an environmental education NGO.
